Inspired by the popularity of our FLATOUTbear Koala, we wanted to create an Australiana design that people would genuinely love. We envisioned something that felt fresh and familiar, a gender-neutral design featuring soft native greens and greys that felt distinctly Australian.
We have always been passionate about Australian flora, so we chose eucalyptus leaves, flannel flowers, yellow acacia and banksias, each with its own distinct texture and scales.
While checking in on our flat bears at various shops in the city, a display cabinet wrapped in flora caught our eye. The soft greens, greys, and yellow tones looked so beautiful together, it gave us the inspiration we needed to move forward with our palette.
The incredibly talented artist, Michelle, instantly understood what we had in mind. The process was creative and collaborative. At first, we considered incorporating all the FLATOUTbear colours, but as the design evolved, the Koala felt like it was the only thing needed. We love that the koalas don’t dominate the design but hide playfully among the leaves, just waiting to be spotted by curious little eyes.
After rough drafts and back-and-forth, we refined every detail until everything felt just right. We ended up with something whimsical and uniquely Australian and we just love it.
Our Australiana design will be printed on 100% cotton baby wraps and bibs, a perfect newborn gift with a touch of the outback.
