The sewing program aims to support and empower six women through sewing lessons, helping them gain new skills and improve their lives. The six women in our program have completed four lessons on how to make women’s shirts, men’s shirts, and a test on men’s pants.
Passing their final assessments shows their dedication and hard work. While making men’s pants was a bit challenging due to the detailed cutting required, the women are moving forward and started learning how to make girls’ skirts.
To support their learning and potential to earn from their skills, five of the women have taken out machine loans.
Story of Hean Seang
Seang was a student in HHA’s language program in 2014 and completed high school in 2019. However, after graduating, her family did not have enough money to support her university studies. Then COVID-19 hit, plunging her family into deeper financial distress. Seang, as the second oldest sibling of four, had to step up to support the family.
Her first job was at a small bakery in town, but it had to shut down during COVID-19, leaving her unemployed until 2021. Seang married young at the age of 21 and now seeks an opportunity to earn a stable income. She had known about HHA’s sewing program for a long time but missed the opportunity. Upon hearing that there is an opening in this cohort, she signed up immediately.
Seang hopes that the program will provide her with a revenue-generating skill so she can give her small family a better start. She, her husband, and their young son still live with Seang’s parents, but they are both determined to secure stable jobs and provide a brighter future for their new family.
Update on Mean Tha
Do you still remember Mean Tha? She was featured in our first blog. We are pleased to update you that Mean Tha has been doing well in her lessons and has continued to show strong commitment.
As the weather gets hotter, Tha isn’t able to grow as many vegetables to sell as she did before, so she uses the extra time to practice her lessons. Like most of her classmates, Tha also took out a machine loan so that she can practice and start earning some money using her sewing skills.
Tha was also selected to join HHA’s home garden project, as she is already growing some vegetables that could support her family’s consumption, and she will receive support on how to increase her yield. Her twins are doing well, and she is preparing them for preschool.
